Brown-Forman Marketing Director - Japan in Tokyo, Japan

Meaningful Work From Day One

This role heads the 20+ person Marketing organization for Brown-Forman in Japan, including brand teams, insights, Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC), brand advocacy, and trade marketing. It sets strategy & direction for Brown-Forman’s portfolio in Japan, ensures high quality execution of plans, develops our people and capabilities, and builds productive external agency partnerships.

What You Can Expect

● Sets the strategic direction for our portfolio and brands. Defines long-term portfolio & marketing strategy and guides the annual brand planning process, including situation analysis, ambition setting, priorities, key initiatives, execution standards and A&P resource allocation, with responsibility across the full marketing mix (consumer & shopper insight, brand communication & activation, trade programs, pricing, etc.). Contributes to long-term and annual, cross-functional, country plans & strategies.

● Inspires & leads the Brown-Forman Japan Marketing Organization with 20+ people. Strengths the team’s capabilities, champions & develops people, manages performance, sets direction & priorities, coaches, and provides regular feedback. Instills and models a culture of high ethical standards, responsible marketing, openness & inclusion, continuous improvement, insight-driven

decision making, and accountability to delivering results.

● Ensures effective execution and evaluation of brand plans, with accurate budget planning & management and effective processes for managing projects, tracking execution, reporting and evaluating results and learning.

● Builds productive external partnerships with a team of marketing agencies for creative development, media planning & placement, PR, event production, etc. Ensures clear scope of work, roles & responsibilities, and briefs; effective ways of working; and open communication & feedback to achieve high quality outcomes and long lasting relationships.

● Collaborates with and influences internal cross-functional partners and senior stakeholders. Serves on the Japan Leadership Team, influencing country strategy and overall organization direction, collaborating closely with Sales, Finance/Accounting, Supply Chain, and HR. Acts as a key thought partner to the Asia Marketing Director and represents Japan on Asia’s Marketing Leadership Team, influencing and contributing to regional strategy & initiatives. Serves as a key point of contact and voice for Japan with regional & global marketing teams.

What You Bring to the Table

● 10+ years of marketing experience with a successful track record of success in senior marketing roles in international companies in Japan

● Good business acumen and judgment based on strategic thinking, financial understanding, and effective use of market, consumer, category, and competitive insight

● Experience leading, motivating, and developing teams

● Proven ability to set clear direction, prioritize, organize and manage multiple business objectives to completion by specific deadlines

● Ability to build productive internal and external relationships and get buy-in for business recommendations

● Persuasive communication skills (influencing, listening, presenting, writing); able to explain sales and analytical results in a clear, concise, and visually appealing manner

● Collaborative team player with strong conflict management skills

● Adaptable, flexible and resilient with a drive for results

● Honesty and integrity

● Language: Excellent written & verbal business English & Japanese

What Makes You Unique

● Experience marketing for FMCG, luxury goods, beverages, or emotional lifestyle/image brands

● Wide-ranging marketing experience across marketing disciplines: insights/research, brand & portfolio architecture & strategy, short and long-term brand planning, brand communication, media strategy & planning, digital platforms & analytics, pricing strategy, trade marketing & activation,, innovation, agency management, contract development, P&L and budget management

● Commercial acumen, such as familiarity with relevant channels (supermarkets, CVS, GMS, e-commerce, bars, restaurants, hotels) and customers

● Experience working for a foreign company, especially a U.S. or European company

● Experience managing in a matrixed organization environment

● Humility and a good sense of humor
