Brown-Forman Assistant Controller - Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards in Windsor, California

Meaningful Work From Day One Leads and maintains direct responsibility for financial planning, accounting, reporting, and analysis functions for Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyard. These activities include general accounting, review and analysis of manufacturing expenses, and monthly reporting and tax functions. This position also oversees the development, maintenance, and monitoring of product costing as well as forecasting and reporting production variances.

What You Can Expect

Financial Leadership and Analysis (50%)

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual closing functions and related analysis of production cost and variance from standard cost for Sonoma-Cutrer. Provide and interpret analysis to the Controller, Leadership Team and Global Production Finance as needed.

  • Support the annual process to develop cost standards for materials produced at Sonoma-Cutrer. This involves using SAP knowledge of activity rates and bill of materials and reviewing the standard calculations for all the production processes at Sonoma-Cutrer.

  • Assist with developing and maintaining the annual capital and operations budget for Sonoma-Cutrer. Monitor monthly spending in relation to the budgets and alert operations and management of budget variances.

  • Maintain budget, projection, and actual costing models to support standard cost and production variance calculations.

  • Manage bulk wine inventory costing and accounting processes and analysis. Monitor Vintrace bulk wine management system activity and other bulk wine and bottling reports.

  • Direct supervision of two reports: Operations Accountant and SCV Payroll Lead. Manage the selection, goal setting, performance development and feedback of each team member.

Controlling, Accounting and Compliance (25%)

  • Responsible for balance sheet account reconciliations and analysis for production operations. Responsible for periodic general ledger closing cycle and subsequent preparation of financial statements and related analyses to accurately reflect business activity based on US generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP).

  • Review and report findings regarding all inventory adjustments, including cycle counts. Identify and monitor slow moving and obsolete inventory, coordinate adjustments with logistics/materials management.

  • Coordinate preparation, filing, payment, accounting, and reconciliation of Federal and State Excise tax payments and returns, including 5120.17 (702) and 5110.40 (DSP) TTB reports.

  • Prepare, review, and submit all business property tax returns. Review and process all property tax payments. Primary contact for property tax audits.

  • Coordinate, audit, prepare and submit annual fixed asset inventory maintenance, retirements and certifications.

Operational Partnership (25%)

  • Prepare capital project financial justifications and audits as requested.

  • Provides financial leadership in the Continuous Improvement process supporting CI team deployment.

  • Responsible for the accuracy and integrity of all financial records, financial statements, as well as supporting management reports (KPIs).

  • Participates on project teams to drive operational efficiencies and process improvements. Quantification of the benefits of these initiatives through OEE calculation, or other financial and cost metrics.

We Are Looking For People Who

  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Accounting, Finance, or other Business-related discipline plus 5 years accounting experience in a manufacturing environment including accounting management experience. Demonstrated proficiency in applying US GAAP principles.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to build productive relationships and partnerships and influence others. Excellent business planning and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft office (advanced excel) and Google software. Comfortable with complex data sources and the understands the importance of data integrity.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with SAP-ERP software (or a similar ERP system)

  • Demonstrated proficiency in English
